What You Need to Know About Supporting a Family
What does it mean to support a family? It is not a trivial thing. It is a real commitment to lift another family in need. If you choose to support a family you are given an anonymous wish list. Each list comes with children's clothes sizes and a few gift ideas. Our goal for each child is:
- At least one outfit (pants and shirt)
- Shoes, if possible
- At least one gift, or "wish" item, from their list
- For the parents, sometimes they ask for household items
- Also, please include grocery, Target or Walmart gift cards for them to buy food for the holidays.
How much can I expect to spend? We guesstimate you will spend around $125 per child. For the parents' household requests and gift cards, that would be another $100- $125 combined.
How large are the families? We have families as small as a single child up to many children. If you think you would like to support a family please let us know the number of children you would like in your family and any ideas of ages and gender.
How many families does The Giving Tree serve every year? This program has been helping the neediest of PUSD families for over 2 decades. In 2023, over 400 families were served.
Is it possible for my book club/office/neighborhood to support one or more families? Absolutely! We see this all the time. It's a great way to share the holiday spirit of giving with others and build community. Just let us know what you can do, and we'll connect you with a family (or families) that will fit your needs.
What's the deadline for the gifts? We will be collecting items Thursday-Friday December 5 & 6. And Monday-Tuesday December 9 & 10.
